Several explosions were heard on Tuesday in southern Iran, including in the key port city of Bandar Abbas near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media reports, though the exact cause of the blasts remains unclear.
State-linked Fars News Agency reported that multiple explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas, Iran’s main southern port city situated along one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Iran’s Mehr news agency said the situation in Bandar Abbas was under control and there was no cause for concern after the explosions were heard east of the city. It said official sources had not yet commented.
The IRGC-affiliated outlet also reported similar explosion-like sounds near the coastal towns of Sirik and Jask, both located along the Gulf of Oman close to the Strait of Hormuz.
Residents in Bandar Abbas reportedly heard several blasts within minutes, sparking concern across the southern coastal region. Iranian authorities, however, have not yet issued an official explanation about the source or nature of the explosions.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the broader Middle East conflict.
According to sources cited by CNN, “intense talks” have been taking place in Doha since Tuesday morning involving Qatari mediators and Iranian officials in coordination with the United States. The discussions are reportedly focused on finalising details of a possible agreement to reduce tensions across multiple fronts in the region.
Iran and the United States have also reportedly reached a preliminary framework of understanding regarding Iran’s frozen assets, Al Jazeera reported citing an informed source, with Qatar playing a central mediation role. If confirmed, an official announcement on a broader agreement could come as early as tomorrow.
A high-level Iranian delegation, including the country’s top negotiator and foreign minister, was in Doha on Monday to discuss a possible agreement with the US and the release of frozen funds.
