Ex-San Diego Padre Adrián González selling La Jolla mansion for $16.5M

Former Padres first baseman Adrián González is selling his La Jolla mansion for $16.48 million.
González, 40, has owned the home since his final year playing for the San Diego Padres. The property on Muirlands Vista Way is large by California coastal standards with seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.

The All-Star first baseman purchased the mansion, with ocean views, for $7.2 million in 2010 — the same year it was built. Listing agents Maxine and Marti Gellens of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties say the home is “Hamptons-style” with the 9,726-square-foot home on a half-acre lot surrounded by grass, hedges and a private gate.
Features include a pool and hot tub, formal dining room, guest suite, large kitchen with ocean views, a theater room, wine cellar and a cigar room. It also has a five-car garage and has an elevator for getting around the three-story home.
González was the first overall pick in Major League Baseball’s 2000 draft. After stints with the Florida Marlins and Texas Rangers, he spent five seasons with the Padres. He was later traded to the Boston Red Sox. He also spent 5 1/2 seasons playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and finished his MLB career with 54 games for the New York Mets. He played for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, Caribbean World Series and Olympics.
González tried to set the record straight earlier this year about his exit from the Padres, in part, motivated by boos he was getting at Petco Park as a visiting player. He said he tried to return to the Padres in 2018 and 2019 at a “hometown discount” but the Padres declined. González has stayed active in the area, owning several Jersey Mike locations throughout San Diego County. González is from the area, born here and raised in Tijuana and South Bay.
González hasn’t always lived in the home, especially considering he left to play for Boston shortly after buying. In 2014, he was trying to rent it out for $20,000 a month.
While the home has panoramic ocean views, it is not an oceanfront home. There are only roughly 30 oceanfront homes in La Jolla and they go for a premium. The biggest home sale in La Jolla history was $24.7 million in late 2020 for an oceanfront home on El Paseo Grande.
