Readers sound off on rent prices, assault weapons and Bella Hadid – New York Daily News
Manhattan: Regarding “Highest rents ever” (June 10), let’s add this: The New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) has the job of upholding rent regulation laws, but they fail miserably to do so. NYC has lost tens of thousands of rent-controlled and rent-regulated apartments in recent years as landlords illegally make them market-rate.
The DHCR does not care and has no review process in this greedfest. Instead, it lets landlords make these conversions on an honor-system basis. Once, I saw a deceased neighbor’s apartment instantly go from a rent-regulated $750 per month to a market rate of $2,900 a month. To legally do that, my landlord would have had to spend more than $70,000 sanding the floors, painting the walls and installing new cabinets and a mini-fridge in the teensy kitchen.
The cure for this problem is to force the DHCR into at least a 10-year look-back to reverse these illegal increases. Along the way, they absolutely need to stop applying the same laws to owners of six-apartment brownstones as they do to owners of big apartment buildings.
And we all need to acknowledge that “affordable housing” is a code word for housing for the poor. The middle class needs affordable housing too. As the middle class abandons NYC, the city goes to blazes. Alan Grassley
Beechhurst: The highest law enforcement official in the land, Attorney General Merrick Garland, is duty-bound to uphold the rule of law. It can be against federal law to threaten judges. Before the upcoming SCOTUS ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, pro-abortion activists, with a nefarious nod from the White House, is doing just that. Now, in light of the assassination threat against Justice Brett Kavanaugh, if Garland still refuses to enforce the law, he should be given his walking papers by President Biden, who is also duty-bound to uphold the aforementioned federal law. Ergo, if the chief executive won’t do the right thing here, a double-impeachment is in order. The Democrats are always on their high horses about protecting our democracy but scratch the surface and it’s always about their pernicious partisanship. James Hyland
Bronx: Kudos to Voicer Peter L. Janoff. Term limits on congressmen and senators are the answer. Virgilio Carballo
Kew Gardens Hills: Re your June 3 report, “Biden says ‘enough,’ calls for assault weapons ban”: It seems clear that the U.S. Senate won’t pass President Biden’s gun control measures because GOP really stands for Guns Over People. But Biden can help end mass shootings by directing the Department of Defense and all federal law enforcement agencies to stop buying firearms from gunmakers who sell semi-automatic assault weapons to the general public. Uncle Sam can give preference in bidding competitions to gunmakers who comply and deny business to those who don’t. State and municipal police departments, including the NYPD, can do the same. Gun company execs, facing the loss of billions of dollars in revenue, may do the right thing due to their responsibility to shareholders. They don’t have consciences, but the bottom line is mightier than the bullet. Richard Reif
Manhattan: Voicer Jimmy Layton draws the wrong “logical” conclusion from the philosophy that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” If so, the correct conclusion is to ban people. Chris Lee

Brooklyn: AR-15s were banned in Canada in 2020. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau banned them after a man impersonating a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer went on a rampage in Nova Scotia. One incident and Trudeau did what he had to do. He took the steps to get AR-15s off the streets, unlike here, where we keep going through the same process all the time. The year is not even half over and already we have had 212 mass shootings. What more evidence does our government need? Stop the nonsense and get it done. How many more people have to die before we say enough is enough? When children go to school, we should not have to worry about whether they are going to get shot. John De Angelo
Warwick, N.Y.: So the unhinged Dems are at it again. A hundred or so unarmed idiots push their way into the Capitol of the most powerful country in the world and our democracy was in danger? Please! Everyone who broke the law that day has been arrested, with many held without bail and given jail time. Too bad the Dems don’t feel the same about the months of violent riots, assaults on our police and billions in property damage! It’s so obvious that this party will do anything to try and stop Donald Trump from draining the swamp they have created! Raymond Klett
Raritan, N.J.: I make it a point to watch Fox News on a daily basis. It helps me understand how they brainwash, and in some cases radicalize, their listeners. I hear the tactics every day: making broad statements about “Biden policies” without explaining what the policy is; making statements that regulations placed on the manufacturers of baby formula were the reason for the shortage, making it sound as if the Biden administration had placed the regulations. Never happened. Everything they do, almost 24/7, is in defense of Donald Trump. China is the real enemy. China made COVID-19 and sent it here. They downplay wearing masks, downplay getting vaccinated. They blame left-wing rhetoric for the man who made threats against Brett Kavanaugh. The channel that claims to be fair and balanced is neither. William Brites
Brooklyn: Re “That’s a lot of Maloney!” (June 8): I look forward to mean Nancy Pelosi punishing AOC for getting involved in this political suicide mission. AOC’s district will suffer so much that she will be lucky to get enough funds to have a sign painted for her district office. That’s politics. Let’s not forget the misguided AOC’s Amazon disaster and the thousands of jobs that were lost because of it. AOC is not a progressive. She is a showboating obstructionist. Chuck Schumer and Mayor Adams, recruit someone to primary her ASAP. As for Biaggi, her grandfather Mario is up in heaven, sadly watching this spectacle. George Gastrinakis
Oceanside, L.I.: Despite the people wanting maps that reflect fairness, once again our political representatives put their parties ahead of the general public. It is never about us, but what benefits them and their grip on political power. Tony Giametta
Tobyhanna, Pa.: To Voicer Betty E. Weisblum: You’re poorly informed about the teachings of Jesus. Contrary to your idea that Christianity is a form of government, Jesus never advocated for a theocracy or any particular form of government, for that matter. As he said, “Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and render unto God what belongs to God.” Jesus was concerned with the long game: where we will choose to spend eternity. His teachings were radical and countercultural then and they still are today. His teachings have changed the world for the better and will continue to do so until the end of time. However, there are false Christians and as Jesus said, “I never knew you; depart from me, evildoers.” Joseph Matarazzo
Margate, Fla.: On May 16, 2021, Bella Hadid posted on Instagram a picture of herself in Times Square with fellow anti-Israel protester Waseem Awawdeh, calling the protesters “respectful, loving, kind and generous.” Awawdeh would soon be arrested and charged with gang assault and a hate crime for his Times Square beating that day of kippah-wearing Joey Borgen. Today, Hadid’s photo is stamped on a large Swarovski glass advertisement in Times Square. In 1944, one-sixth of Swarovski’s labor force was Jewish slave labor. Daniel Swarovski and all of his sons were enrolled in the Nazi Party by 1933. Recently, Swarovski hired scholar Dieter Stiefel to investigate and discover the full extent of Swarovski’s cooperation with the Nazis. Now Swarovski refuses to publish Stiefel’s findings. Clearly, those Jew-hating, goose-stepping black eagles flock together in Times Square. Richard Sherman
