City Apartments Sell Recycled Water To Industries, Get Rent | Bengaluru News
In some cases, apartments are exploring cutting-edge technology to make water fit for potable purposes and trying to remove the psychological barrier in residents about consumption of treated water. At present, waste water goes through an 11-stage filtration process at the tertiary plant and this low TDS (total dissolved salt) water, or white water, is supplied for laundry, cooling tower, washing solar panels and other industries. At present, two apartments have adopted this model and a plan is in the offing at 11 others.
Not only are apartments contributing to the environment by saving water, they are also earning revenue in the form of rent from those who set up sewage treatment plants on their premises.
Shameer Abdul Rasheed, a resident of SJR Verity apartment at Sarjapur Road, said nearly 1 lakh litres of STP water is generated daily in the complex, where nearly 1,000 people live. However, only 40,000 litres is being used for flushing and gardening purposes. “We used to pump the rest out by hiring tankers, paying Rs 500 for each. It was costly. Later, we decided to install a tertiary plant with the help of Boson White Water, a private company that provides technical assistance.”
Now, the apartment is converting 60,000 litres into potable water and the company supplies this water to industries. The company also pays Rs 7,500 a month as rent for the space where the plant is set up.
Karthikeyan R, secretary, Owners Welfare Association (OWA) of Pramuk Aqua Heights apartment near Electronics City, said before this system was installed, surplus STP water was sent in tankers. “Every month, 40-50 tankers of water were sent and we did not know the end use. The OWA was spending out of its own pocket. But now we are earning rent,” he said.
He stressed that more than the revenue aspect, OWA is concerned about the environment at a time when there is water scarcity. “Through this model, we are saving a lot of water and it is being used meaningfully. There are 1,500 people residing here. I have informed many friends who live in other apartments to follow this method,” he said.
Vikas Brahmavar Adiga, CEO of Boson White Water, said in 11 stages several contaminants are filtered out, making the water highly potable. In the United States, under the direct potable reuse policy, STP water converted into potable water is consumed by people.
“Here, because of psychological barriers, people are unwilling to drink filtered water although it is the same as reverse osmosis quality,” he said.
