Hearing set on proposed commercial event law | Greene County

ATHENS — A proposed law that would allow private landowners to operate commercial venues on their property will be the topic of a public hearing held by the Athens Town Board later this month.
The hearing is scheduled for June 20 at the Athens Volunteer Firehouse. The hearing will air comment on the proposed Commercial Event Local Law. Athens town officials are considering granting landowners permits to operate as commercial venues.
“Examples include properties with old barns that are renovated for the purpose of hosting weddings, parties, events, etc.,” Town Supervisor Michael Pirrone said Thursday.
As of May 1, Athens voting districts 2 and 4 have relocated to the Town of Athens Highway Department Facility, located at 79 Old Kings Road.
On June 11, Athens will celebrate its Community Day beginning at 10 a.m. at Riverfront Park. The 47th Annual Athens Street Festival will be held July 9. The festival is also held at the Riverfront Park. It is Greene County’s longest-running festival.
The Athens Street Festival begins at 10 a.m., ending at 11 p.m. Last year, the festival committee donated $1,000 to the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Restoration fund. Local vendors, craft beer, live music, and fireworks are all scheduled for this year’s Athens Street Festival.
