In commercial motor vehicle crashes investigated by the Colorado State Patrol over the last two years, speed, lane violations and distraction are the top causal factors involving commercial motor vehicles.
Speeding, lane violations, and distracted driving are risky for all drivers, but especially in a commercial motor vehicle weighing an average of 80,000 lbs. Commercial motor vehicle drivers are highly trained professionals who are held to a higher standard than the general motoring public. We rely on commercial drivers to transport goods and passengers across our state in a safe manner. When these drivers choose to speed, make unsafe lane changes, or take their attention away from the road, it puts everyone on the road at risk.
As of the end of June 2023, the Colorado State Patrol has investigated 84 crashes involving a commercial motor vehicle where someone was injured or killed. Comparatively, Colorado saw a total of 202 injury/fatal crashes in 2021 and 198 injury/fatal crashes in 2022. This summer, law enforcement across Larimer County will be teaming up at undisclosed intervals to increase awareness and enforcement to prevent a needless tragedy.
To make this happen we will need your help too. If you see someone who is driving dangerously call *CSP (*277) or 911.
Troopers continue to take a low-tolerance approach to the top fatal crash factors, including lane violations while launching a yearlong campaign called “Drive Safe.” This campaign reminds people to control their lane position based on their current driving environment.
