These Are The Fastest Commercial Planes In The World

Airplanes are essential in today’s globalized world; aviation represents the fastest and most effective way to get from one country to another, and close to 100,000 passenger planes take off every single day, transporting people all over the globe in a matter of hours. Without them, we would be stuck with boats and ships that entail far greater travel times and considerably more uncomfortable rides – a reality many of us weren’t even alive to see.
Ever since the first flight in world history – completed by the Wright Flyer in 1903, aircraft have been undergoing constant evolution, and nowadays, there are some passenger airplanes capable of flirting with supersonic speeds, such as the Bombardier Global 8000 private jet, which broke the sound barrier during an SAF test flight.
When it comes to larger commercial airplanes that are far more accessible to us than a $78 million dollar private jet, there are still some aircraft that can cruise at insanely fast speeds and carry hoards of people across the world as if it were nothing. Let’s take a look at some of the fastest commercial planes in the world.
World’s Fastest Commercial Planes: Airbus A380
Even with a capacity of 555 seated passengers and an empty weight of 610,700 pounds or 277,000 kg, the Airbus A380 is one of the largest and fastest commercial planes around. Equipped with four 70,000-pound thrust engines, it’s capable of cruising at Mach 0.85 and reaching a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.89, which is equal to 683 mph.
It can travel up to 15,000 kilometers fully loaded in a single flight and has a price of about $375 million.
World’s Fastest Commercial Planes: Airbus A350-XWB-1000
The Extra Wide Body Airbus A350-1000 can seat up to 410 passengers, with an unloaded weight of 491,630 pounds or 223,000 kg. It’s powered by a some of the world’s most powerful long range engines, a pair of Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 turbofans that allow the A350-1000 to reach a cruising speed of Mach 0.85 and a maximum operating speed of 0.89. Its travel range is about 15,600 kilometers, and it has an average price of around $352 million.
World’s Fastest Commercial Planes: Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner
The Dreamliner 787-10 is slightly smaller than the previous entries, as it’s capable of seating 330 passengers in a 2-class setup with a listed empty weight of 425,000 pounds or 193,000 kg. Equipped with either a pair of General Electric GEnx-1B or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines capable of producing 76,000 pounds of thrust, the 787-10 can cruise at up to Mach 0.85 with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.90. It has a range of 11,910 km and a listed price of around $306 million.
World’s Fastest Commercial Planes: Boeing 747-8i Intercontinental
This massive jumbo jet is a beast both in terms of size and performance. It can seat 467 passengers in a three-class configuration, with an empty weight of 651,000 pounds or 295,000 kg. It comes with four GEnx-2B67 engines that produce 66,500 pounds of thrust each, allowing the 747-8 to reach a cruising speed of Mach 0.855 and a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.92. With a range of 14,430 kilometers, the 747-8 has an average price of around $378.5 million.
