Single parent Tommy Prior, 34, who lives near Milton, works as a sandwich delivery driver.

The father-of-three said: “There’s a lot of families out there like myself who are struggling.

“Ten years ago you could go to the shops and easily fill our baskets up for £100 and that would be a month’s shopping.

“It’s now about £100 to £150 for a week.”

He said, until the council called him, he had not heard about the Healthy Start, external top-up and, when they explained what it was, thought he would not be entitled.

He now receives £17 every four weeks because he has a child under four, which he spends on fresh fruit and veg.

“It means we can start eating properly and making fresh food again for the kids,” he said.
