A new consultancy, People and Purpose Consultancy, has been established in Ballyhaunis to support small businesses in strengthening both their staff engagement and their community connections.
The consultancy was founded by Catherine Hannon, who has more than 25 years’ experience working across marketing, public relations, event management, banking, and technology.
After returning to Mayo, she identified a growing need among SMEs for practical guidance on how to support their employees while also contributing to their local community in a meaningful way.
“Small businesses play a central role in towns and villages across the west,” Ms. Hannon said.
“Many want to look after their staff and stay connected to their community, but they may not have the time or resources to plan it. My aim is to make that easier.”
Focus on Community and Employee Engagement
People and Purpose Consultancy offer support in two key areas:
Employee Engagement – helping SMEs build stronger staff connection, improve communication, and create workplaces where people feel valued.
Community Engagement – guiding businesses in developing simple, achievable ways to link with local charities, clubs, and community groups.
The consultancy focuses on practical actions that fit the reality of small business life, rather than the more corporate‑style CSR approach.
Local Support
The development of the consultancy was supported by the Local Enterprise Office Mayo and the Southwest Mayo Development Company, who provided guidance as the business was being established.
Why It Matters
The west of Ireland has the highest volunteering rate in the country, according to the CSO.
Ms. Hannon believes this strong community spirit offers SMEs an opportunity to support their staff, strengthen morale, and contribute locally in a way that benefits both the business and the wider community.
