Shanghai |Touching down on a rainy night in Shanghai this weekend, I discover I have a new tool for bonding with the locals: complaining about taxes.

I’ve long employed a strategy of lamenting rising property prices in Japan’s Tokyo and Kyoto – and, in China, falling property prices in Shenzhen and Chongqing. But a widening crackdown on tax collection across mainland China has provided a new source of financial anxiety. And now Australia is adding to it.
