AFG’s Favorable Return on Capital

Factors Favoring AFG
American Financial continues to demonstrate resilience as the property and casualty insurance market gradually moves toward more competitive conditions. Its diversified Specialty P&C platform, spanning roughly 36 niche businesses across property, transportation, casualty and specialty financial lines, provides flexibility to adjust underwriting and pricing based on market conditions. In the second quarter of 2026, gross and net written premiums increased 7% and 6%, respectively, while about three-fourths of its businesses reported premium growth through June.
Average renewal pricing excluding workers’ compensation increased approximately 5% in the second quarter, marking four consecutive quarters at roughly that level. Including workers’ compensation, renewal rates rose about 4%. Strong pricing helped AFG deliver a 91.5% Specialty combined ratio, improving from 93.1% a year earlier, while first-half underwriting profit jumped 44%. Property and Transportation renewal rates increased 8%, including a 15% rise in commercial auto liability. Pricing in excess liability and umbrella also remained in the double digits, supporting attractive underwriting returns despite softening in certain P&C markets.
Investment income is providing an additional earnings boost. P&C net investment income increased 23% year over year to a record second-quarter level. Alternative investments generated a 7.1% annualized return, while fixed-maturity investments were being deployed at yields of roughly 5.5%. The performance of alternatives will remain an important variable for investment income growth.
AFG ended the quarter with $6.81 billion of total capital and no parent-level debt maturities until 2030. It returned nearly $100 million to shareholders during the quarter and raised its annual dividend 10.2% in August, marking the 21st consecutive annual increase. Continued excess capital generation should enable AFG to balance organic growth, acquisitions, share repurchases and dividends, supporting shareholder returns even as insurance pricing moderates.
