Real estate investment that began with a cancer diagnosis.
A complete novice started learning from scratch, and after failures and trial and error, the total investment amount reached 900 million yen in three years. That story has become a book. On sale October 8th.
The trigger for me starting real estate investment was YouTube.
Why did I start real estate investment?
The trigger was “YouTube”.
Now, I am in a position to teach real estate investment, and I have even published a book.
However, I didn’t think “I’m going to study real estate investment” from the beginning.
Rather, the beginning was much simpler.
I was bored.
After cancer treatment, I had nothing to do
As I wrote in the magazine summary, after I finished cancer treatment and was discharged from the hospital, I was still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because my physical strength and immunity had dropped due to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, I was living a life of avoiding contact with people as much as possible.
I couldn’t meet people.
I couldn’t go outside either.
I couldn’t work like I used to.
It was, so to speak, a life of “soft house arrest.”
Only time was passing by.
Those were my days.
That was when I started watching YouTube.
In fact, there were days when I watched it for about 10 hours a day.
Of course, I had no intention of studying from the beginning.
Basically, I just let it play in the background (laughs).
In the midst of that, I happened to start watching YouTube videos about real estate investment.
“This might be interesting.”
As I watched several videos, my interest gradually grew.
“So this is how real estate works.”
“I didn’t know there was this kind of investment method.”
That’s how I felt.
There was one channel that left a particularly strong impression on me.
It had a style of talking like a radio show, so I could understand the content just by listening, without even looking at the screen.
For someone like me who was just letting YouTube play in the background, this was perfect.
And then, I noticed something interesting.
Various YouTubers were saying similar things.
At first, I didn’t really understand what they were talking about.
But after listening to it many times,
“This topic has come up again.”
“That must mean it’s important.”
I started to understand it little by little.
I wasn’t taking any notes.
I was just listening.
Even so, by listening repeatedly, it gradually sank into my mind.
Furthermore, real estate-related sites like Rakumachi and Kenbiya also started to be something I looked at.
What is said on YouTube and what is written on the sites.
The same information appears in various places.
When that happens, basic knowledge is naturally imprinted in your mind.
And then, at one point, I thought.
‘When I return to my original life, I will try real estate investment.’
This was the beginning of my real estate investment.
‘Streaming’ had, before I knew it, become ‘studying’.
This is the part I find interesting.
I was not a diligent student from the beginning.
I was watching YouTube not for study, but to pass the time.
However, without realizing it,
‘becoming interested’
from the first stage,
‘wanting to know more’
I had advanced to the second stage.
The turning point for that was when I thought, ‘Let’s try taking the Real Estate Practical Examination.’
From here, my way of watching YouTube also changed.
Until then,
‘listening vaguely’
That was the case, but
‘This is important.’
‘This is information I can use in practice.’
I started watching while understanding the meaning.
And, for the first time, I started taking notes.
From passive ‘streaming’ to active ‘learning’.
Looking back now, I think the moment this switch flipped was the true beginning.
YouTube is the ‘entrance’. What comes after is what matters.
Of course, I do not believe that ‘you can succeed in real estate investment just by watching YouTube’.
Rather, once you reach a certain point, there is a limit to how much you can deepen your knowledge with YouTube alone.
If you are serious about building assets,
・Learn systematically through books
・Obtain necessary qualifications
・Join landlord or investor groups
・View actual properties
・Obtain raw information from financial institutions and real estate companies
you need to move on to the next steps.
However, as a first step, I think YouTube is very effective.
Suddenly,
‘Read 10 books on real estate investment’
is a pretty high hurdle, isn’t it?
But with YouTube, you can watch it casually.
Get interested.
Listen repeatedly.
You will understand it little by little.
And then,
when you think,
I want to know more, that is when you should read books, get certifications, or meet people for the first time.
By the way, if you are going to watch real estate YouTubers, I recommend watching their early videos.
This is because in the early days, many channels share what they have actually experienced and their knowledge without holding anything back.
As the number of subscribers increases, they may repeat the same content in different ways, increase themes focused on view counts, or talk more about economics and investments other than real estate.
That is precisely why I look at that person’s origins.
I highly recommend this.
Summary: A small step of trying something out can change your destiny
In my case, the start of my real estate investment was not something spectacular.
After finishing cancer treatment, I couldn’t meet anyone, had nothing to do, and was just watching YouTube.
Before I knew it, that turned into interest,
interest turned into learning,
and learning turned into action.
And before I knew it, my total investment amount reached 900 million yen, which is where I am now.
Come to think of it, the trigger that changes your life might not need to be something grand from the beginning.
A single video you watched casually.
A small interest you felt for no particular reason.
That can sometimes change your life.
For me, the beginning of real estate investment was ‘YouTube’.
And what changed my life was not YouTube itself, but
I think it was that small first step when I thought, ‘Let’s give it a try.’
People do not learn only after the environment is ready.
Learning begins the moment interest sprouts.
